US Sees Multiple Historic Firsts in Legislation
While the Electoral College Vote count is stuck at 264 for Joe Biden and 214 for Donald Trump, here are some positive factors about the upcoming new legislators that might give you hope for the years to come for the USA.
All of the members of what people are calling The Squad have been re-elected during the US Presidential Elections of 2020, placing them all back in Congress. The Squad is made up of four Congresswomen, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts, Ilham Omar from Minnesota, and Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. All four of the female lawmakers of colour took offices first in January 2019, and have caused massive progress through their campaigning.
A Muslim non-binary state legislator who prefers โtheyโ or โsheโ pronouns, Mauree Turner won their race for District 88 for the Oklahoma State House, becoming the first Muslim lawmakers in the state and the first nonbinary state legislator in the history of the country.
Three women of colour have formed the very first all-women Congress delegation for New Mexico, setting the bar for the years to come. The delegation includes Deb Haaland, a Native American who got reelected for her second term, Yvette Herell, a Cherokee Nation member for the NM 2nd District, and Teresa Leger Fernandez, the first woman in the NM 3rd District to hold that seat since 1983.
In New York, two openly gay black men won their US House races for Congress, Mondaire Jones and Ritchie Torres, making further history for the kind of representation to be expected for the decades to come in the USA, especially the kind of representation the voters want in their Congress. Furthermore, Jones tweeted his gratitude and awe for the community that voted him into Congress, especially considering the kind of housing community he comes from and the fact that he grew up โon food stampsโ.
Congratulations to all of the above 10 legislators and Congresspersons on their House wins. This week, USA not just makes history, but breaks it with the representation voters want in their Congress.
