Selena Shows Off Kidney Transplant Scar
Three years after her kidney transplant surgery, award-winning American singer-songwriter and actress Selena Gomez is finally and proudly showing off her scar in the baby-blue “Play Date” coloured La’Mariette “Selena One Piece” swimsuit.
In 2017, the singer revealed that she had to receive a kidney transplant due to her fight with the lupus disease. Despite chemotherapy, the transplant surgery was the only option left to save her life when she “nearly died” according to articles from the time of the surgery. Her best friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa was the one who ended up donating one of her own kidneys to then 25-year-old Gomez.
Selena Gomez had been suffering from anxiety and depression due to lupus and her struggle with the auto-immune disease and laid low the summer of the surgery too. While speaking about that time and her struggle in her latest Instagram post, the singer/actress says:
“When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that. T – Congratulations on what you’re doing for women, launching @lamariette whose message is just that…all bodies are beautiful.”
Lupus is an auto-immune disease that attacks normal, healthy tissues and can damage a person’s skin, joints, blood, the heart, the lungs, and the kidneys to the point of organ failure. The symptoms of lupus include inflammation, swelling, joint aches and butterfly-shaped rashes on the skin, especially the face. This is a long-term disease that usually becomes active in women between the ages of 15 and 44 years old.
