Mayar Sherif Wins 2nd Grand Slam at Roland Garros
Egyptian 24-year-old tennis professional Mayar Sherif just won her second Grand Slam at the Roland Garros Series of the 2020 French Open. Not only has she bagged a massive win with the Grand Slam, but she has also set a record by becoming the first female tennis player from Egypt to win in a major, senior-level tennis tournament.
Sherif won the Qualifier match against Colombian tennis professional Maria Camila Osorio Serrano at the Stade Roland Garros in a play with 6-4 and 6-0 scores in the first round. With this win, she has placed Egyptian tennis women professionals on the map and in history; she also managed this feat when she ranked No. 172 in the world.
About her recent win, the Egyptian tennis star says:
“I always imagined myself doing something good here in Paris. I’m just enjoying it, it’s such a dream to be here and to compete here. I’m going to try to enjoy it as much as I can.” (RolandGarros.com)
Mayar Sherif began her tennis career just last year after graduating from Pepperdine University. She was completely unranked and had played college tennis and reached the NCAA semi-finals. In the span of 10 months’ time, she broke World Top 200 with 71 match-wins.
