What is happening in Varosha, Cyprus?

The twelfth and current president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called out to the Turkish Northern Cypriots to “protect these lands”, referring to the Varosha area of Famagusta, Cyprus that has been under the Turkish rule since 1974.

The resort town of Varosha has been abandoned and thus became a ghost town consequently. However, as of Thursday last week, the fencing that went up to divide the East Meditarranean island of Cyprus in two was taken down by the Turkish military to bring the Cypriots and tourists back to the city that once used to be bustling with trade, celebrities, and beachgoing.

Now, President Erdoğan has called out to his “Turkish brothers in Northern Cyprus”, asking them to “protect these lands” that he says are theirs. One twitter account posted a video of the announcement:

While the Turks see this as an opportunity for trade and infrastructure improvement amongst many other ideas, the Greek Cypriots and Russians consider this a violation of international law, calling out for the city of Famagusta to be returned. According to some articles, the hopes for the resort town of Varosha and the city of Famagusta to even return to its bustling levels of activity seem like a distant idea if a settlement of some sort is not reached.
