DIRBS is Pakistan’s Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System policy, while the Mobile Policy is a Device Manufacturing policy that was recently first implemented this summer in June 2020. The newly introduced policy is meant to cause a reduction in the prices of mobile and smartphone devices in Pakistan while increasing exports at the same time through incentivisation and tax breaks.
According to Minister Azhar’s tweet statement, the two policies caught the attention of the mobile company’s executive team, prompting them to consider setting up an assembly plant in Pakistan. If the plans go through, Pakistan will be able to produce phones with 3G and 4G capabilities; we have only been producing devices with 2G options at the moment and this would be a big leap for the country as well as our economic conditions.
DIRBS is a policy that, once fully implemented, would ensure that only registered devices can be used within the country regardless of the illegal import of devices through smuggling.
