Virat & Anushka Get Attacked by Commentator

Recently, Indian national cricketer and player for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team in the Indian Premier League, Virat Kohli and his wife Indian actress and Hindi film producer Anushka Sharma were verbally attacked through a jab made by Indian cricket commentator Sunil Gavaskar at the IPL match between RCB and Kings XI Punjab.

The former Indian cricketer and current commentator Sunil Gavaskar had been co-hosting the IPL match between RCB and KXIP when due to a poor display of cricket and bowling skills by Kohli, Gavaskar took a verbal jab at the cricketer. However, instead of commenting directly on the cricketers skills, he commented on Virat’s practice sessions with Sharma in a way that was heavy with sexual innuendo and became a reason for criticism by Anushka on her Instagram Stories and a reason for jokes and memes by the general Indian cricket-watching community.

The commentator had meant to say that Virat Kohli had only trained against the bowling by Anushka during the lockdown period, referring to the video shared below that went viral back in May 2020:

However, what he really ended up saying is “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hain” which translates to “Virat Kohli has only trained against Anushka’s balls during the lockdown”, a line that he should have been careful about, knowing how easy it is for sentences’ meanings to easily change based on just one word or even emphasizing the wrong part of a word or sentence.

In response to the incorrectly and obscenely worded comment, Anushka Sharma took to Instagram Stories saying:

“That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband`s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us?” “I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?” “It’s 2020 and things still don`t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?” “Respected Mr. Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman`s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this.”

Reacting to Sharma’s stories, Sunil’s son and former cricketer, Rohan Gavaskar tweeted in a way to suggest that this was merely a case of misunderstanding and that his father’s words were being taken out of context:

  • This is a very good website. I’ve been back a couple of times over the past week and wish to subscribe to your feed using Google but cannot learn the right way to do it very well. Do you know of any tutorials?
