Serena Williams Withdraws from French Open’20

American tennis superstar Serena Williams has withdrawn herself from the Roland Garros tournament of the 2020 French Open after revealing that she cannot continue playing due to her Achilles injury. In a press conference held at the Roland Garros courts yesterday, she revealed that she has been struggling with her Achilles injury since her semi-final defeat at the US Open by Belarusian former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.

In her latest match on Monday, September 28th against American tennis professional Kristie Ahn, she had been physically struggling to play, but she still won the match in the first round with 7-6 (7-2) 6-0 at the Philippe-Chatrier Court. However, by the second set, Williams says that she “needed to walk with a limp” and “had to focus on walking straight so I wasn’t limping.”

The 39-year-old tennis professional who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles had been hoping to beat the record set by Margaret Court with her 24 Grand Slams, but that will have to wait unless Williams plans to retire from her beloved sport entirely. When speaking about the rest of the tournaments of the year, Serena says, “I’m not sure I will play another tournament this year. It is not an acute injury, it is a nagging injury. I ran into bad timing and bad luck really.”

She also says that she’ll need about four to six weeks to recover and recuperate from the injury. According to one article by the LER Magazine, only 70% of the athletes are usually able to return to their plays, and even then, it takes them about two years to completely recover from their injuries to play at their prior level.

The tennis-loving team at Media Quotient Inc. wishes Serena Williams good health, a complete and speedy recovery, and the best of luck!
