Ikea introducing Black Friday Alternative

Ikea introducing Black Friday Alternative

The world’s largest and most successful Swedish furniture (and meatball) store, IKEA is introducing an alternative to the November 27th “Black Friday” shopping spree that brings hoards of people to stores and malls every single year without fail. This year, since the lift of the lockdowns across the globe, it is expected that while the numbers could be lower, people will continue to spend in hundreds of thousands to quench their desire for purchasing items that they usually don’t need this winter again.

IKEA has announced for Canada that they will be holding their version of the Black Friday sale, but with the difference that it will be called a “Buy Back” initiative with certain categories of preloved items that they will buy back to be sold under their bargain section. The news was announced just a couple of days back and we believe it is the best thing ever!

Their “Buy Back” initiative plan states: “By making sustainable living more simple and accessible, Ikea hopes that the initiative will help its customers take a stand against excessive consumption this Black Friday and in the years to come.”

Here is how the Buy Back initiative is planned to work:

1. A consumer with an original IKEA item visits the brand website and completes the “Sell Your Furniture” form with their own and the item’s details alongside indicating the store where the consumer would drop off the item.

2. IKEA items acceptable in the initiative include furniture like drawer units, tables, chairs, cabinets, desks, shelving, and cupboards in an un-modified condition that is completely assembled.

3. The consumer will then be required to wait for an IKEA expert to send an offer for the item indicating the company’s valuation of the product. Items in a “new” condition with no scratches will get 50% of the original price with “very good” condition items with minor scratches valued at 40% and “well used” items with several scratches priced at 30% of the original price of the furniture item.

4. The consumer will be required to drop the furniture off at the indicated IKEA store, and if the item is not assembled, the consumer will be required to do so with provided tools at the store.

5. In the case that the photographs sent by the consumer match the in-person product, the consumer will be awarded an IKEA gift card at the value of the item.

6. Finally, the item will go on sale in the Bargain Section at the same price offered to the consumer.

Are you excited about this latest new scheme being introduced by IKEA to become a more “circular” business that recycles and reuses items to be resold at a lower rate? We feel that instead of selling new items when the option of buying pre-loved ones is becoming increasingly popular and rightfully so!

Share this with your Canadian friends and family and let them know the great news.
