Heartbreaking News in the World of Football & Sports

In news that has shaken the entire world regardless of their affiliations and preferences, Argentine football legend and “magician” Diego Armando Maradona has passed away due to a heart attack at the age of only 60 years. In response, his home country Argentina is declaring three days of national mourning for the sports hero.

Diego Maradona, nicknamed “El Pibe de Oro” (“The Golden Kid”) was an Argentine football professional known for his speciality in free kicks who later created a strong-running career in football club management. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century Award and had been a part of a total of 9 teams during his senior and national careers from 1976 to 1997. After retiring from a professional football player career, he began managing clubs and had been on the management of 8 teams from 1994 until this year. His preferred plays included the attacking midfielder and second striker positions.

It was in the beginning of this month on Monday, November 2nd, 2020 that the Golden Kid was admitted to a La Plata hospital for supposed psychological reasons. While there, he underwent brain surgery on an emergency basis for a subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding with blood collecting between the inner layers of the meninges around the brain. It is said that his next treatment was supposed to be on his alcohol dependency, according to a BBC Sports article. By Thursday, November 12th, he was released with outpatient supervision from his doctors. However, he suffered from a heart attack yesterday while he was at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Maradona did not survive the stress of the attack and passed away.

The Argentine Football Association expressed “its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend” through a social media statement. At the moment, his body lies at the seat of the Argentina government in Casa Rosada while Argentina goes through the three days of declared mourning. In response to his passing, yesterday’s Champions League matches began with a minute long silence in his honour and remembrance, something that will follow before European plays this week too. The Sport Club Internacional versus Boca Juniors match scheduled for yesterday was postponed. Furthermore, mourning fans congregated at multiple locations including La Bombonera, the Boca Juniors’ stadium (one of his former clubs), the San Andreas (Maradona’s neighbourhood), and La Plata where he had most recently been managing the Gimnasia y Esgrima club.

Maradona had been a part of the professional football world from a young age and was constantly in the eye of the media and press. His clubs included Barcelona and Napoli and he was the captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup. He was a recipient of the “Hand of God” title for his quarter-finals goal against the English team.

The team at Media Quotient Inc. is heartbroken at the news of Maradona’s passing and would like to remind everyone to give his family the space and time they deserve to mourn the legend’s passing.
