CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute 2020
“CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” is an annual show that honors regular people for their commitment and contributions to improving this world and making it a better place to live. This year, instead of broadcasting a live show in front of an actual sitting audience, the show was pre-recorded to prevent the risk and spread of the coronavirus. The show went live on Sunday, December 13th, 2020 at 8pm Eastern Time on all CNN platforms including CNN TV, CNNgo via the website and SMART TV and mobile apps, CNN International, and CNN en Español. People with HBO and HBO Max subscriptions will also be able to view the show starting Thursday, December 17th, 2020.
This year’s tribute honored people in two important events: the Black Lives Matter racial equality movement and the struggle and fight against the Coronavirus Pandemic that struck the world in the most powerful way while still keeping everyone as connected as possible.
The CNN Heroes tribute has been happening since the past 14 years. The 2020 show was co-hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Kelly Ripa alongside 14 celebrity guests who also hosted, performed and spoke at the pre-taped show. The tribute honored frontline workers in their fight against the pandemic, advocates for equality justice, communities, champions of democracy, teachers for their unending efforts to keep education going, volunteers in the BLM movement and the COVID-19 pandemic, and young wonders who worked to ensure that the underdeveloped communities remained fed and connected.
The most anticipated portion of the tribute might have been the Viewer’s Choice for the Most Inspiring Moment of 2020. Viewer’s of the channel had 6 options to choose from and voted for “Humanity Wins”, an act of humanity by Patrick Hutchinson at a BLM protest held in June 2020 in London, UK. While attending his BLM protest, a black father and grandfather, Hutchinson was quick to act when a white former officer Bryn Male who was getting attacked at the protest. Him and his friends formed a cordon around the man as he fell to the ground while Hutchinson picked Male up in a fireman’s carry and took him to safety.
