Artist Spotlight Eshna Kutty
Today, we at Media Quotient Inc. are ecstatic to give a shoutout to a 23 year old Indian hoop dancer and flow artiste Eshna Kutty from Delhi, India. She dances with a grace and beauty akin to none other with a vibe that is bound to give a serotonin boost to just about any and everybody across the globe. She is a hoop dancer, teacher, facilitator and performer who is constantly learning throughout her journey with custom hoops, online classes and the #SareeFlow movement, through which she hopes to bring back the culture of Indian hoopers.
According to her website, Eshna Kutty has been hula hooping alone in her bedroom to lit stages in front of packed crowds for ten years now. She currently has 146,000 followers on a verified Instagram account and offers for her followers to join the Hoop Flo journey through her mailing list where people can learn how to hoop, buy custom hoops that she has been working on, or even indulge in both!
While the young artist has been dancing and producing dance content for her page for a long time, her work really blew up with a 2 minute, 15 second-long video of her dancing to ‘Genda Phool’, wearing a purple and orange saree that belongs to her mother over multi-colored Pumas. The video that she posted on September 23rd blew up to 2,223,533 views (2.2 million) over time, gathering thousands of new followers, viewers, and fans from all across the world. In fact, the response to the video was so phenomenal that she was hesitant to post another video until a week afterwards. Regardless, the response had a massive butterfly effect, causing the video to pop up in every Instagrammer’s feeds, and grabbing the attention of analysts who were left wondering about the factors involved in causing this kind of public reaction.
According to one article, the video making was not high quality, the sneakers weren’t the best option she had, and the saree wasn’t one that the family agreed was her best decision either. Yet, the amalgamation of the emotions, the outfit, the song choice, and the pure, unadulterated joy radiating from the performance in combination with the already heightened global emotions and conditions created a phenomenon that left marketers in wonder and awe.
Over time, Eshna Kutty has produced almost 2 dozen more posts, but none of them have been able to capture the attention and response the way her Genda Phool Saree Flow video accomplished. Her latest post is a hoop dance rendition of hers on a song “Purvayi” by Midival Punditz featuring Papon. The video’s climax is a beat drop where she waits till it arrives and then spins numerous times while still in the hoop, laughing and smiling as she does so. Eshna wears a plain layered grey and orange skirt, an orange headband, and mismatched socks (no shoes) while gliding along to the music.
