Vidya Balan as Shakuntala Devi
Indian actress Vidya Balan portrays the lead character ‘Shakuntala Devi’ in her latest, recently, released biographical drama, now available on Amazon Prime India as of Friday, July 31st, 2020.
Shakuntala Devi was an Indian mental calculator who was also known as the ‘Human Computer’. She was also a writer and strived to simplify mathematics for students, a subject she considered ‘magic’, according to the biographical film. She was a Guinness World Record holder for her talents and received her place in 1982.
Devi passed away in April 2013 and was survived by her brilliance and her daughter, Anupama Banerji, whom she had with her ex-husband Paritosh Bannjerji, who later revealed his homosexuality and catalysed Devi’s book, ‘The World of Homosexuals’.
The namesake film is a biopic of the mathematician’s life, her brilliance and her accolades. The story is told through her relationship with her only child and daughter, Anu, whom she took away from Paritosh.
The film is directed by Anu Menon, and produced by Sony Pictures and Vikram Malhotra with Sanya Malhotra playing as the lead’s daughter and Jishu Sengupta playing as her ex-husband.
