Primetime Emmy Nominations for 2020
The nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are out for all 6 major television show categories of Comedy, Drama, Limited Series/Movie, Reality TV, Short Form, and Variety Show alongside 20 other award categories.
The PrimeTime Emmy Awards recognize the TV shows and their cast and crew for showing excellence in their category and field. This year’s show will air on ABC on Sunday, September 20th at 8PM Eastern in a 3-hour long event, Hosted by TV’s beloved host, Jimmy Kimmel.
This year’s Comedy nominations include Amazon’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ with the most entries at a 20 count, Pop TV’s ‘Schitt’s Creek’ with 15, HBO’s ‘Insecure’ and FX’s ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ with 8 each, NBC’s ‘The Good Place’ with 6, Netflix’s ‘Dead to Me’ and HBO’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ with 4 each, and Netflix’s ‘The Kominsky Method’ at 3 nominations.
This year’s Drama nominations include Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘Succession’ tying at 18 each followed by Disney Plus’ ‘The Mandalorian’ racking up 15 with just one season, Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ with 13, Hulu’s Handmaid’s Tale’ with 10, Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ and BBC’s ‘Killing Eve’ tying at 8 each, and AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’ at 7 overall nominations.
HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ takes the lead in the Limited Series category with 26 nominations, raising its chances of winning awards substantially, followed by 10 for Hulu’s ‘Mrs. America’, 8 for Netflix’s ‘Unorthodox’, 5 for Hulu’s ‘Little Fires Everywhere’, and 4 for Netflix’s ‘Unbelievable’.
The TV Movie category is being led by Netflix’s ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’ with 4 nominations, followed by 2 each for HBO’s ‘Bad Education’ and Netflix’s ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend’, and 1 each for two of Netflix’s TV movies ‘American Son’ and ‘Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones’.
In the Variety Talk Series category, HBO’s ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ takes the lead with 9 nominations followed by 5 for Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show With Trevor Noah’, 3 each for CBS’ ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ and ABC’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, and 2 nominations for TBS’ ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’.
The Variety Sketch Series category is being led by NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ with 15 overall nominations, overshadowing the 3 nominations each of HBO’s ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ and Comedy Central’s ‘Drunk History’.
Amongst the Competition Program category, VH1’s ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ is leading with 10 nominations, followed by NBC’s ‘The Voice’ with 6, Bravo’s ‘Top Chef’ with 4, and 2 each for Fox’s ‘The Masked Singer’ and Netflix’s ‘Nailed It’.
