Cate Blanchett as Anti-Feminist Phylis Schlafly
In a historical miniseries drama that just ran its course earlier this spring on the FX channel, ‘Mrs. America’ portrays Phylis Schlafly, a conservative and an author by profession who opposed basically everything that the Feminist Movement stands for, including abortion, the ERA, and feminism itself.
In a viral video that is making multiple rounds on social media, Cate Blanchett as Mrs. Schlafly opposes the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in a live debate, and when she tries to make her case against it and women receiving equal rights, she is eventually unable to ‘cite the case’ that she so vehemently refers to show her opposition of the Amendment.
Mrs. America ran on the FX channel from April 15th to May 27th, 2020. The miniseries contains 9 episodes, each of which has fictionalized aspects of events and characters. The show is available to be streamed on Hulu and Hulu+Live TV.
The ERA was passed on 22nd March, 1972 by the United States Senate. It was first proposed in 1923 by the National Woman’s political party to provide legal equality for all sexes and legally prevent discrimination based on a person’s sex.
