Tokyo & Australia Olympic Committees Determined to Hold Games 2021
The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (2021) and the CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee, Matt Carroll have sent out statements and been reported by news agencies confirming their determination to go ahead with the plans to hold the Olympic Games at Tokyo, Japan this year in July 2021. While rumours have been surfacing in regards to senior members speaking out about being against holding the Games and hoping to cancel them entirely this year, the organizers and committees have confirmed that the rumours are in fact untrue, refuting any such cancellation plans.
The Tokyo 2020 organizers released a statement via ESPN, confirming to participants and teams all across the world that their “delivery partners… are fully focused on hosting the games this summer” with hopes “that daily life can return to normal [soon]”. Amongst those determined to hold the Games this year is the Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga who expressed his resolve towards holding the event in the statement by providing his support. The Tokyo 2020 organizers have confirmed that meetings are going on in regards to making the Games as secure and infection-free as possible with as many precautions as they can set in place. The US Olympic & Paralympic Committee has also stated that there has not been any change in the status of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
However, it must be taken into consideration that situations have been unprecedented and uncontrollable since January 2020, and that while the organizers have confirmed their determinations to hold the event, this does not mean that the event cannot get cancelled at the last moments.
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach told a Japanese news agency Kyodo: “First of all, let me be clear that you cannot compare March 2021 with March 2020 because there is such great progress in science, medicine, vaccination and [virus] tests”, reminding people that none of the above mentioned were available in March 2020 and that nobody knew how to deal with the pandemic and all that it had begun to entail at that time.
