Sharapova Announces Engagement to Alexander Gilkes
We are all about to hear wedding bells go off in the tennis world very soon because Russian-American former tennis professional Maria Sharapova just confirmed the news of her engagement to British businessman boyfriend Alexander Gilkes yesterday on Thursday, December 17th, 2020! Sharapova is saying “Yes!” to forever with Gilkes and we couldn’t be happier for the two of them.
Maria Sharapova first confirmed that she and Alexander Gilkes were dating back in October 2018, over two years ago to the day. Since then, they partied together in Vogue-like settings, traipsing across the world and enjoying each other’s company to the fullest of extents. Sharapova just retired from professional tennis this year in February 2020 while Gilkes is the co-founder of Squared Circles (est. 2020) as well as co-founder and former president of Paddle8 (est. 2011). The latter of the two companies was sold to The Native in 2018 and that is when he stepped down from his position in the company.
This will not be Alexander Gilkes’ first marriage though; he was first married to US-based British-Bahraini fashion designer Misha Nonoo from 2012 to 2017. Reports started appearing first in 2016 that the couple had broken up and by the summer of 2017, their divorce was finalised. Gilkes and Nonoo do not have any children together. Gilkes is also known for his close friendship with Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge from their time together at Eton College.
While Sharapova has never been married before, she had been engaged to Slovenian professional basketball player and former LA Lakers shooting guard Sasha Vujačić from 2011 to 2012.
Gilkes started dating Sharapova in 2018 and their relationship was confirmed after their trip together to the Cotswolds in October of that year. However, they were spotted together at numerous occasions since earlier that year: hanging out around the Beverly Hills in March 2018 and at the Argento Ball for the Elton John Aids Foundation in June.
