Iman Vellani Cast as Ms. Marvel
Marvel has finally cast their actress, Iman Vellani, for the role of Kamala Khan, i.e.: Ms. Marvel for their upcoming Disney+ series based on the comic-book character that first appeared in the comics in Aug 2013.
The Pakistani-Canadian teenaged actress will be appearing in her debut onscreen role and hails from Markham, Ontario. She is about 18 or 19 years of age and was born to Muslim immigrants from Pakistan living in the Canadian city. Vellani is a graduate from Unionville High School, York. She was selected as the TIFF Next Wave Committee member at the Toronto International Film Festival last year in 2019. According to articles, casting this character took its time but Marvel finally found their Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel.
The Marvel/Disney+ series is being created by Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, with writing from G. Willow Wilson, artistry from Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie. The directors of the upcoming project include Pakistani award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy alongside Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, and Meera Menon.
The story of Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan, a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager obsessed with the Avengers. According to Mr. Kevin Feige, the chief of Marvel Studios, this debut of the first Muslim superhero for the screen will allow the character to be included and featured in future Marvel films and productions as well.
