Prominent US Figures Hacked in Bitcoin Scam
Numerous international and American celebrities and prominent figures have been attacked as part of a Twitter hacking scheme with a Bitcoin scam that took place in what Twitter is calling a ‘coordinated’ attack on their employees, internal systems, and tools.
Yesterday, on July 15th, 2020, multiple accounts, including verified ones of billionaires and industry leaders, started Tweeting the same content: ‘I am giving back to the community. All Bitcoin sent to the address below will be sent back doubled! If you send $1,000, I will send back $2,000. Only doing this for 30 minutes. Enjoy!’ The tweet would include a Bitcoin address made up on letters and numbers in an attempt at a Bitcoin scam.
Following the hacking, Twitter immediately took matters into their own hands, releasing a 12-part series of Tweets to fix the problem and have disabled multiple features for attacked accounts including the ability to change passwords.
@BBC reported that some of the hacked tweets directed users to a web address (cryptoforhealth.com), which is registered by a cyber-attacker with the email mkeyworth5@gmail.com and name ‘Antony Elias’ – most likely a pseudonym and a word-play on ‘an alias’. The web domain is also the username of an account on Instagram that posted a Create Mode story saying, ‘It was a charity attack Your money will find its way to the right place.’ -@CryptoForHealth on Instagram.
Unfortunately, the identity of the hacker(s) is still unknown. @MediaQuotientInc_ advises all social media users to be wary of unknown accounts, links, and posts, tweets or stories that look shady or make you unsure of the intentions and origins.
‘We advise the public not to fall victim to this scam by sending cryptocurrency or money in relation to this incident.’ says the FBI San Francisco field office in a statement.
